Washington [US], April 12: In a statement released after a trip to the US, Egypt and Europe, Foreign Minister Peters said New Zealand is facing a chaotic global environment due to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, according to Reuters today. 11.4.
Mr. Peters made it clear: We cannot "sit still" in the South Pacific, and only talk to countries with which we agree. It is important that we are present, listen to all perspectives and strengthen partnerships with our traditional partners so that we can adapt to the complex global environment.
Mr. Peters said New Zealand's focus remains on getting closer to the US to realize the goal of building a prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific region.
"The United States is one of New Zealand's most important strategic partners in the Pacific, along with Australia, Japan and other European countries. Together we can achieve more for the Pacific compared to when we do it individually," Mr. Peters added.
Mr. Peters said the US and New Zealand are committed to working closer together in the Pacific Islands region, during a meeting with US counterpart Antony Blinken in Washington, DC (USA) on April 11.
According to the descriptions of New Zealand and the US, these two countries are close strategic partners and their relationship has become increasingly closer in the past few years due to shared concerns about threats in the Pacific. At the same time, New Zealand is also a member of the Five Eyes intelligence group, including Australia, the US, Canada and the UK.
In addition, New Zealand and the US will provide financial support to the region by committing 9.84 million USD for digital connectivity initiatives as well as ocean and fisheries research.
